Holographic weapon sights should not be confused with simple Red Dot sights or Reflex Sights because they use a different underlying technology to produce the holographic reticle image. This approach allows holographic weapon scopes, such as the ones built by holosights by EoTech to achieve effective infinite parallax free distance of observation between the shooter and the target. Most reflex sights and red dot scopes rely on projecting an image of a reticle on a semi reflective surface to achieve the visual “effect” of a holographic weapon sight. In reality, this approach creates a certain amount of parallax when the eye of the shooter is not in perfect alignment with the center of a standard reflex sight.

Holographic technology used by Eotech allows for the parallax to be constant at any range of observation and never greater than the radius of the sight window. An additional benefit is that unlike reflex sights, even if the heads-up display window is covered by mud, snow rain or other debris, the HWS will remain operational, without compromising the point of target impact. Even after sustaining damage to the laminated window, the holographic weapon sight will remain fully operational as long as the operator can see through any portion of the display – the entire reticle will be visible at the point of aim.
